New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these treatments need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
