Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
